Safe Driving Tips for New Drivers

Driving is exciting for young people. After spending their entire lives up to that point depending on others for transportation, a driver’s license makes them feel suddenly independent. While the teenagers are excited, parents are rightly worried. It’s important to give new drivers the best start possible so they can be safe on the road.

Here are some important tips for keeping new drivers safe on the road.

  1. Make sure the car is in good working order. When possible, allow new drivers to drive newer vehicles. Newer cars have more safety features, such as improved restraint systems, driver assist, and blind spot detection. Cars wear out, too. The older a car is, the more things that can go wrong. When something goes wrong, such as an engine stall or a tire blowout, a new driver might not know how to deal with the emergency. All Tech Automotive can provide a safety inspection to make sure that everything is working well before your teen hits the road.
  2. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), parents should help by making themselves familiar with the laws for graduated driver’s licenses. Nebraska has a Parent’s Supervised Driving Program where parents can help develop their teens’ skills. The Nebraska parent-teen driving agreement holds new drivers accountable for following the rules.
  3. New drivers must learn about the effects of drug and alcohol use on driving. Parents should speak to teens about the laws regarding underage drinking and the consequences if they get caught drinking and driving.
  4. New drivers do better when they have good role models who are involved in the process. When adults are involved, new drivers are less likely to be involved in accidents or to drink and drive. Parents should practice safe driving habits when their children are watching.
  5. Distracted driving is one of the most common causes of accidents, and young people are famous for being easily distracted. Teens may think they can text, talk on the phone, put on makeup, and do other activities while driving. There are enough distractions even when the driver is trying to focus on the road.
  6. Limiting passengers in the beginning is one of the easiest ways to cut down on distractions.
  7. Emphasize how important safety restraints are. Teens are more likely to be involved in crashes, and a seatbelt could save their lives.
  8. Most teenagers don’t get enough sleep. Make sure the new driver is not going to fall asleep behind the wheel.
